Monday Monologue #8

Hello lovelies! Today is a super duper special edition of Monday Monologue because it is the day of my birth. That's right, 43 years ago today, in a hospital in Oklahoma City, I was born. And since that day I have experienced so many things; good, bad, and ugly. Many of those things I have shared with you, in one way or another, and many more I have not. It's been an interesting life, not all together good or bad, but never dull. Today I celebrate that through it all, I am alive and kicking - you're welcome for that earworm, that is as long as you're old enough to realize there was an earworm to be grateful for in the first place.


I usually celebrate my birthday by going out to a nice dinner with Brandon, but that isn't happening this year for obvious reasons. Sadly, take-out isn't an option from my usual birthday restaurant either, so I've opted for take-out from our favorite Chinese Thai fusion place here in Barrie. I was craving it before everything was shutdown anyway, so it won't be much of a compromise. Now I just need to decide if I'll get the Pineapple Chicken of the Sesame Chicken. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.


I got the results of my follow-up ultrasound this past week and I learned that I have Fibrocystic Breast Disease. Basically that means that I have lumpy boobs due to all the lovely cysts that like to hangout in my boobs and throw parties for all their lumpy friends. This isn't news to me, because I've been dealing with this issue since just after puberty, though until Thursday, I didn't have a name for it. You'd think having a name for your lumpy boobs would shed some light on the subject, giving you some relief from having constantly sore boobs, by offering a treatment, but you'd be wrong. (run on sentence much?) If I were in the states they'd drain the bigger cysts, ultimately relieving the pain, as I've had done in the past. It's almost instant relief from the discomfort, but not a guarantee that you won't get more cysts. As a side note, in the states they recommend limiting your caffeine intake as a way to avoid getting so many cysts in the future. Here in Canada though, they simply tell you to avoid caffeine and let them know if I notice any changes. Pain be damned! Gee thanks!


You guys the weather is finally so flippin' nice! I have been waiting for this moment since October and it finally showed up this past week and this weekend was amazing. It's so nice to be able to get outside and walk and just soak up the vitamin D while having a conversation with your significant other. Blue skies, warm breezes, birds singing, the smell of BBQ's from your neighbors balconies and yards, the sounds of children playing, pulling out your first pair of shorts of the season and blinding everyone with legs that haven't seen sun in months, and the smell of fresh cut grass. These are a few of my favorite things! OMG this is my time of year. I need to live in a place that is sunny and in the 70's all year long. If that place could also include a beach on the ocean, I'd be in heaven. HEAVEN! Anyway, my spirits have lifted with this change in weather, and I am happy about it.


We saw temps spike into the upper 80s this weekend and apparently my life in Canada is slowly starting to make it more difficult for me to deal with the heat. Upper 80s is nothing where I grew up, but here it's a whole different story. By Sunday, after having several vigorous and lengthy walks in the heat everyday, I had perhaps one of the worst headaches I've ever dealt with. So, Brandon finally talked me into turning on the A/C before going to bed last night, and I started feeling my headache ease up as the room cooled. Heat induced headaches and dizziness are no joke, yo!


Speaking of walking and nicer weather... it's making it easier to get out and exercise, which I'm loving. We are averaging just over 5k (about 3.5 miles) for most of our outside walks, which isn't bad. That's about what I walked everyday when I lived in Columbus, but I coupled that with about 5 to 7 miles a day on the stationary bike as well. So, I have a ways to go, though we did manage a few over 4 mile walks and many just at 4. My stepper is here! I kept getting shipment notifications followed by delivery delay notifications, but it finally showed up on Saturday. So now I have another way to help shed lbs, even if the weather outside sucks. I'm also still doing my stretches and core exercise, as well as meditating and doing 30 minute indoor walks twice a day. I feel like it's all starting to help. Fingers crossed!


My reading this week slowed a bit, not because I wasn't reading, but because I was reading too many things at one time. I tend to multitask that way, and it usually isn't an issue. This week I was reading a lot of The New Yorker articles and also added a book of poetry - Love: A Selection of Famous Poems - to the other two books that I was already reading. The book of poetry is now the 21st book I've finished this year. Gah! I'm almost done with Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, and should be finished by early this week. The Mindful Geek, however, is taking a bit longer simply because of the nature of the subject. I have about a dozen books waiting to be read, some of which are compilations of short stories. It should be enough to get more through the summer. Do you have any must read book recommendations?


It's day 73 of social distancing, quarantine, lockdown, or whatever you find yourself calling it. For me it's day 73 since I was able to do the little things I enjoy, outside of my condo bubble. That being said, I'm more than happy to stay home another 73 days or longer if it means keeping everyone safe. Ontario started Stage 1 of reopening on Tuesday but in our city we didn't see many if any retail stores opening. Old Navy finally opened on Sunday. I think it's good that these retailers are taking their time to make sure they have a solid social distancing plan in place before opening their doors. Sadly, I don't think they'll stay open long before we possibly have to roll back stage 1. Why? Because on Mother's Day weekend then again on Victoria Day weekend many people defied stay at home guidelines and gathered with family and friends and now our numbers are spiking again. It's frustrating! We all have a role to play in this and when some people decide that they don't have to follow the guidelines, they negatively impact the outcome for us all. Just stay home if you don't have to be out and about! Don't be selfish!


It's also Memorial Day in the USA, so take a moment to remember those who have served and have given their lives for your freedoms.


Ok Ok, that's my rant for the day. Now I'll get on with the birthday celebrations, perhaps with margaritas made with my favorite Casamigos Tequila that I got for my birthday. YUM! No worries, I'll wait until this afternoon. I pinky promise.
