Revisit Rome: The Colosseum
Updated: Nov 30, 2020
Hello Lovelies and welcome back to my Revisit Rome Series! Today we are highlighting The Colosseum, and all its beauty. This iconic piece of architecture is definitely a must see when in Rome. Whether you are visiting with family, as a couple, or flying solo, you won't want to miss it!
As usual, I have to recommend getting there early or possibly just before they close, as long as they are still letting people in. We chose to get there early, arriving about an hour before they opened the gates, and there was still a line, but nothing like the line had been the previous day. It was definitely worth waking up early to avoid all the crowds and waiting.
Once inside, you are pretty much free to roam for as long as you like, and you'll definitely want to spend at least an hour, if not longer, checking it all out. When we visited, the interior was being worked on, as well as some of the exterior and the grounds around the Colosseum. That was in 2019, but you still may want to check the status of these restorations and construction before your visit, so you'll know what to expect when you get there. Being a photographer, I had to get creative with my exterior shots for sure, in order to crop out all the chaos and ongoing construction. Hopefully I'll get to go back some day and get THE shot I wanted without all the mess.
I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the views of the surrounding area from the Colosseum. While making your way around the top floor, you'll notice that the scene is ever changing as you look out through the arches lining this beautiful structure. So make sure you take the time to pause and snap a photo or two of The Arch of Constantine and The Forum. I mean really, most of us only get this opportunity once, so don't waste it!
But don't let your visit end there. You really should take the time to stop back by the Colosseum at night. Words cannot express how beautiful this structure looks when night falls and all the lights come on. Especially if you are visiting in the heat of the summer, as it's much cooler at night, and therefore much more pleasant. The crowds are thinned out and you can easily find a place to sit and enjoy the view. It's very romantic, just sayin'.
*Tip: the ticket for the Colosseum also includes entry to The Forum. So, you may want to plan your day to allow you ample time to see both of these fantastic attractions. And speaking of The Forum, I'll be covering that next!
